A New Feature: The Swiss Army Top 10

Literary Blog HopLiburuak proudly presents a new feature: The Swiss Army Top 10 of book recommendations. It’s a list of books I think most people are likely to enjoy.

A range of factors came together for me to create the list.

  1. Holiday season is upon us. People are looking for presents. People ask: “What book do you think I/my father/third cousin twice removed might like?”.
  2. BookRiot, or rather Jeff of The Reading Ape, creator of the term “Swiss Army recommendation”, posted his own list a while ago here, and then Rachel of A Home between Pages responded here.
  3. The Blue Bookcase is hosting this thing called Literary Blog Hop, which consists of prompts related to literary fiction for the bookish-minded blogging community (this is the first time I’m participating, so yay!). This week’s question is: What work of literature would you recommend to someone who doesn’t like literature? My spanking new Swiss Army Top 10 is my answer (although my recommendations are not necessarily just for people who don’t like literature. Some of them might not actually be that suitable for a literature-sceptic, you need to let them in gently).

Enjoy! And feel free to discuss: what would you recommend?

  1. Loving the books in your list, but not sure if all are suitable for newcomers to literature.

    • I totally agree with you, Parrish. Not all of them are meant to be – this is where my idea of tying a response to the BookRiot “Swiss Army” recommendations and one to the Literary Blog Hop together fails a bit. The “Swiss Army” list in its original by Jeff wasn’t meant to be for total newcomers if I remember correctly. So I guess my own list comes closer to that than to an answer to the blog hop question.
If you pressed me hard, I the ones on the list that come closest to the Blog Hop prompt, in my view, are The Handmaid’s Tale, Love in the Times of Cholera, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Imperfectionists, The Time Traveller’s Wife, and perhaps Everything is Illuminated. I would say these are the most likely to be enjoyed by non-habitual readers (and of course the bonus non-fiction cheat-out 😉 ). What do you think?
