Books, Bikes, and Food

Reviews, Recipes, Rides… and some other things, too.

Thank You Muchly

Two awesome things happened lately:

  1. Lu of Regular Ruminations tagged me in one of these memes that float around the blogging world. I have to confess that I think my blog should be more about books than about me, but I felt very honoured and so I just wanted to say thanks! I selectively answer some of her questions below, since…
  2. Bundle of Books awarded me as one of her five favourite book blogs! I might have done a little happy dance in my living room at that point. Thank you!

The award I’d like to pass on from Awesome Thing Number Two is the Kreativ Blogger Award. Here it is:

Cute, yes? The award requires me to share five random things about myself, so here’s what I did – I picked five questions from Lu’s meme and answered them. Voilà!

1. Tell us one thing that we don’t know about you!
I’ve moved 12 times in the past 9 years.

2. Is there one book you’re always recommending? Which book is it and why.
Several, looky here! I think the one I recommend most often is The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera.

3. Have you convinced anyone to read said book? Did they like it?
A number of people, but I think the one I’m most “proud” of is my boyfriend’s brother, who is a very smart person and I highly value his judgement. So far, no-one I’ve recommended it to has hated it (or openly told me so).

4. What is the one book you’ve been dying to read but you haven’t yet?
THE one? Loads! One that’s been on my reading list for quite some time but I haven’t gotten around to yet is Scoop, by Evelyn Waugh.

5. What’s one goal you have for this year?
After passing my PhD viva, which is kind of where my horizon ends at the moment, I’d like to run a 10k race this year.

Now, as for my own five favourite book blogs… oh man, this is a tough one. I’ll tell you which ones I find the most inspiring at the moment, subject to change, in no particular order of preference, and no strings attached for the listed.

  1. Iris on Books – Iris, like Nymeth below, comes up with the most thoughtful posts. These two ladies challenge me to think more deeply about how and what I read and write it down, even if it sparks controversy.
  2. Things mean a lot – See above; Ana a.k.a. Nymeth thinks very deep thoughts on books, often in the feminist direction, and I enjoy her posts a lot.
  3. The feminist Texican [Reads] – Melissa is quite a recent discovery of mine and has already inspired a few of the books on my reading pile and one on my already read list, which I adored. We share a curiosity for all things Latino, though I value her female voice a lot, too.
  4. Caravana de recuerdos – Richard shares my obsession with Spanish language literature. ‘Nuff said.
  5. Dead White Guys – I heart Amanda’s irreverent approach to the Classics and wish I could be as funny as her. I particularly enjoyed her recent thoughts on why irreverence is a good thing. “Mostly because funny is always more interesting than unfunny.” Um, yes.

  1. First of all: aw, thank you so much for the kind words! You know, I remember really loving The Unbearable Lightness of Being, but I was 17 when I read it, so I’d really like to read it again. It’s not that I think I’ll not love it this time around, but I bet I’ll see it with brand new eyes. Thanks for reminding me that a reread is long overdue.

  2. Congrats on the award, Bettina, and thanks for mentioning my blog among such fine company. I have to say that while I’m really looking forward to your Javier Cercas review, I’m kind of “jealous” that you’re reading the work before I am. Too much good stuff out there to keep up with, you know?!? ¡Saludos!

  3. Thank you for answering some of my questions!
