Bookish Geek-Out: Lockengelöt’s “Schlüsselroman”

I just found this very exciting thing at a shop here in Hamburg that I have to tell you bookish lot about:

Lockengelöt Hamburg: Key holder “Schlüsselroman”

There’s this small shop around here called Lockengelöt which sells all things funky for your flat, and they have this line of key holders called “Schlüsselroman” (literally: key novel) made from old books. There’s also a bigger version to hang your coats in a literary fashion, called “Kleiderordnung” (dress code). For those of you not lucky enough to live in the Free and Hanseatic City, you can order them on-line.

I know for sure where my keys will be hanging out once I move into my new flat THIS WEEKEND. Now all I need is to find the time to actually go to Lockengelöt and buy one.

  1. But what about the book? You killed the book! It’s a trophy like a giant lion’s head on the wall!

Now I’m going to have nightmares…

    • Oh no! I hadn’t thought about it that way! But I’m going to assume that they’re using books that otherwise would’ve been thrown out, so I can feel better and still hang one on my wall 😉 (this sophisticated technique is called “bookwashing”, it’s the bookish version of greenwashing).

  2. If old & damaged books are used I like this idea of giving them a new lease of life instead of just destroying them.
To Tony, don’t worry it had been scribbled on by some mad pen wielding fiend, it wasn’t new.

  3. I understand Tony’s reaction but so mayn books are just discarded, it’s a second life for them and an original idea at that.
